What is The Travelling Reader?
The Travelling Reader provides a book subscription service based on British fiction set in beautiful Britain. Using recommended fiction books, we gather locally-crafted, book-related or place-related products, then parcel it all up for you so that you can take a captivating journey from the comfort of your own armchair. We select our fiction books from novels written after 2000. Our monthly boxes are: The Original Travelling and The London Travelling Reader. The Traditional Britain boxes are special editions which include factual books and are available now and then - please keep your eyes out for new boxes or sign up for email updates when we will be sure to let you know. The Junior Travelling Reader is a quarterly box for our younger members aged approximately 8-12. We also offer a box, without a monthly book, called Simply British Tastes, which delivers a monthly taste of British foods.
What's in the box?
For our monthly fiction boxes, you will receive a fiction book that is set in Britain or Ireland and book- or place-related items which complement your reading experience. You may discover an item from the locality or something from the story itself. Where possible, we aim to source our products from locally based suppliers or small business artisans to support the local economy. The boxes contain a different book each time. In our Traditional Britain boxes, we include a factual, non-fiction book.
Please note, the choice of items in your box is based on the value of the complete reading experience, not the total monetary value.
How much are our boxes?

When will I be billed?
If this is your first time subscribing, you will be billed immediately.
After that, you will be billed on each 1st of the month. You will receive your box shortly after we have shipped (which differs for each type of box). Please see the table below for cut-off dates, dispatch dates, and recharge dates.
When do you ship the boxes?
We ship The Original Travelling Reader boxes around the 20th of the month - please be aware this may fluctuate but by no more than 1-2 days in normal circumstances. Unfortunately, sometimes delays can occur (very rare!) but we are always working hard behind the scenes to get your box to you on time and we will always inform you. Times of dispatch vary by box - please see the table below for all cut-off dates, dispatch dates, and recharge dates of all of our boxes.
How is the box shipped?
We send our boxes by Royal Mail. We use Standard delivery. Once the box has left us, we are not longer responsible for its safe arrival with you, however we will do our best to assist you in the unfortunate event that your box goes missing.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes! Once you enter your address at the checkout, international delivery rates will appear with your order.
If this does not happen automatically, and especially if the UK price of £2.99 appears, please contact us for more details about shipping to other countries and the prices incurred. If shipping does not add on at checkout, please contact us before purchase.
How long will it be before my box arrives?
We ship boxes by second class Royal Mail deliveries. Please expect this to take at least 2 days to be delivered to your address in the UK. If you do not receive your box within 7 days, feel free to contact us so that we can help you report the incident with Royal Mail. International shipping times will vary according to country and we cannot be held responsible for any delays. We are also not responsible for paying international import charges if these apply to your country.
What happens if no one is in to receive the box?
If you miss your delivery and have received a delivery slip, you can ask your postal service to redeliver your box which should be for no extra charge. However, this may be dependent on your postal system rules. Please remember that if your box is not collected within a certain time frame (dependent on your postal service), it will be returned to us. In this instance, if a box is returned to us, we can either refund the money you have paid for the box (not delivery costs) or we can resend the box on receipt of a further shipping payment.
What if I have already read this book?
As The Travelling Reader boxes uses the surprise element, book titles are not disclosed to the recipients until they have received the box and therefore, you may on times receive a book you already have. We would hope that the other products included with the box would complement the book and more than compensate for any unknowing duplication. We do not refund boxes based on this reason. Alternatively, we would suggest that the book could be given to a friend.
How do renewals work?
When you subscribe, payment is taken immediately for one month. Once your subscription cycle has finished, and you have received your box, you will be re-billed for the same cycle again on the correct date (please see the table below for recharge dates) unless you cancel or switch your plan.
Can I skip a month or cancel?
We will charge you each month for your box on a recurring basis until you decide to cancel. If you want to skip a month, that's not a problem. Just log in and request to skip. If you want to cancel altogether, you can do so also by logging into your account. Please bear in mind the date of the month because we may have already taken payment or shipped your box. I missed out on a box I really wanted! What can I do?
After boxes have been shipped out to customers, we generally have a small amount left which we then put on sale in the shop. However, these are limited and once they have sold out there are no more. The shop boxes also cost a little more, so we advise subscribing to the box on a monthly basis to get a better deal!
How do I purchase a gift for a friend?

What's the difference from the subscription page and the shop?
Our subscription page is hosted by Subbly and is separate from our shop pages. Shop purchases are separate and are shown in a different cart system.
